Did you know you can eat cooked stinging nettles? (They're delicious, and really good for you, too!) Have you heard about maypops and pawpaws--two "tropical-tasting" fruits that grow in the Midwest? There are a host of delicious wild foods, just waiting to be gathered and prepared... nuts and fruits, greens and flowers (yes, many are edible)... roots, mushrooms and more! With Abundantly Wild, you'll learn about many wild foods you may have overlooked all your life. This book is written for the casual to moderate forager, who enjoys the outdoors and wants to add variety and taste to the menu.

Few cooks are more comfortable working with wild edibles than Teresa Marrone, shown at left (in bright pink shirt) leading a wild foods foray during the 2004 Field to Family event in Iowa City (co-leader Brad Freidhof* is at right, holding a copy of Abundantly Wild). Teresa is the primary author or consultant on numerous other outdoor-related cookbooks (see our home page for information on some of these other cookbooks). She has been published in magazines including Outdoor Life, Boundary Waters Journal, the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer and Backyard Living, and is an experienced instructor who has taught numerous gourmet cooking classes in the upper Midwest as well as cooking seminars for the National Wild Turkey Federation and the prestigious Becoming An Outdoors-Woman program. *Brad is a Naturalist for the Johnson County (Iowa) Conservation Board. He works at Kent Park outside of Iowa City, Iowa. Please visit Kent Park if you're in the area; it's a wonderful place to forage and ramble! |
